By Jack the Pointer mix!
Hey there, humans!
I’m Jack, your friendly neighborhood Pointer mix. I might look cool with my tongue hanging out and my tail wagging in the sun, but let me tell you a little secret: summer can be ruff for us dogs. When the sun’s blazing, things get hot—really hot—and if you’re not careful, it can put us pups in danger.
So grab a treat and sit, stay, and listen—because here are my top summer safety tips straight from the doghouse!

1. The Pavement is Lava!
Okay, maybe not actual lava… but close! Here’s a good test; simply touch the pavement with the back of your hand for seven seconds. If you can’t hold your hand down for the full seven seconds because the surface is too hot, then it’s also too hot for your dog’s paws. Our paws are sensitive. I’ve seen friends get burned just from a short stroll down the block.
Jack’s Tip: Walk us early in the morning or later in the evening when it’s cooler. Or take us to a grassy park. Bonus points if there’s shade!
2. Hydration = Happy Dog
I get it. I drool a lot. But in summer, I drool extra because I’m trying to cool down. Water isn’t just for drinking—it’s life-saving.
Jack’s Tip: Always keep fresh water nearby. If we’re going out, pack a bottle and a collapsible bowl. (Yes, I know it makes you look like a superhero. You’re welcome.)
3. Please… No Fur Coats in July
You wouldn’t wear a winter coat in a heatwave, right? Neither should I. Some dogs need their coats for protection, but regular grooming helps me stay cooler.
Jack’s Tip: Brush us often to remove that fluffy undercoat. But talk to a groomer before giving us a haircut. We all have different needs depending on our breed.
4. Parked Cars = Danger Zones

Here’s something serious: even with the windows cracked, a parked car can turn into an oven in minutes. The safest thing to do, is leave us at home! Being left in a car for 10 minutes in 75 degree temps, is actually 100 degrees inside your car! If it’s 85 degrees, then it only takes 5 minutes to feel like 90 degrees. Don’t risk it, leave us at home, it’s safer and cooler for us.
Jack’s Tip: If you’re running errands, leave us at home where it’s cool. I don’t mind skipping the store. I’d rather nap in front of a fan anyway.
5. Sunscreen Isn’t Just for You
Some of us (especially the short-haired or light-colored pups) can get sunburned. My buddy Luna got a nasty one on her nose last year. Ouch.
Jack’s Tip: Ask your vet about dog-safe sunscreen. And try to keep us out of direct sun between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.
6. Splash Zone Approved!
Want to make my tail wag? Water games! A kiddie pool, a sprinkler, or even a gentle hose spray is my idea of a summer party.
Jack’s Tip: Supervise us around pools. We’re not all natural swimmers. And rinse us off after a swim to get rid of chlorine or salt.
Final Woof: Keep an Eye on Us

We can’t tell you when we’re overheating—at least not in words. But if you see us panting heavily, drooling more than usual, or acting tired or dizzy, it could be heatstroke. That’s an emergency. Call the vet right away.
Alright, that’s all from me. Stay cool, stay safe, and don’t forget to toss me a frozen treat once in a while (peanut butter + banana pupsicles are my favorite!).
Paws and love,
Jack
