Meet Suzanne – A True Hero for the “Unadoptable”

May is National Pet Month, a time to celebrate the incredible bond between people and their animal companions. It’s also a time to shine a light on those who go above and beyond to make a difference in the lives of pets who need it most. Few embody that spirit more than Suzanne—a woman whose quiet acts of love have transformed lives.

Some people talk about making a difference—Suzanne lives it. She and her extraordinary family have opened their hearts and home to animals many would overlook… the ones deemed “unadoptable.”

Take Kienan, for example. When he arrived at our rescue center, he was terrified, shut down, and emotionally scarred after enduring unimaginable trauma. He didn’t trust people, avoided eye contact, and spent months hiding from the world behind the safety of his kennel. To many, Kienan seemed like a lost cause—one of our longest-term residents.

Kienan

Where others saw fear and detachment, Suzanne saw a soul worth saving. After long workdays, she would come to the shelter—not to push affection, but just to sit quietly near Kienan. She offered calm, patient presence, letting him know he was safe. Night after night, she showed up with no expectations, just unwavering kindness. And slowly, something incredible happened.

Kienan began to trust. His walls started to come down, inch by inch. His eyes softened. He approached her, cautiously at first, then with growing confidence. Today, because of Suzanne’s dedication and belief in him, Kienan is a completely different dog. He’s thriving—playful, joyful, and loved as a cherished member of her family.

Pebbles

She later welcomed Pebbles, a sweet pup born with a deformed foot. Where some might have seen a disability, Suzanne saw potential. Pebbles now runs, plays, and cuddles with the same enthusiasm as any other dog—because someone believed she was worthy of that chance.

And the compassion clearly doesn’t stop with Suzanne. Her daughter, inspired by her mother’s example, adopted a dog of her own from our rescue center. Together, this family is creating a legacy of love, showing that when empathy and patience lead the way, extraordinary things happen.

Suzanne’s story is exactly what National Pet Month is all about: celebrating the deep, healing connections we can form with animals, especially those who need a second chance the most.

We’re thrilled to launch our “Double the Love” campaign during the month of May honoring National Pet Month!, where every dollar you give will be matched—up to $500,000—to support animals like Kienan and Pebbles. That means your gift goes twice as far in helping us provide shelter, medical care, behavioral support, and ultimately, loving forever homes for animals who need it most.

Suzanne is proof that no animal is beyond hope. Her story reminds us that some of the most profound transformations come not from grand gestures, but from consistent love, quiet patience, and the belief that every life is worth saving.

Donate today and double your impact.
Together, we can give every animal the second chance they deserve.
