Every adoption story is different, but some remind us why we do what we do. Larry carried emotional scars from a past we couldn’t see, and they made him scared of the world. When he first arrived he had to be isolated due to an illness. He only felt safe when he was hiding in his bed, tucked under blankets, or hidden under pillows. Larry was even afraid to go outside during his first days with us. His eyes told the whole story: he wanted to trust, but fear was always there.
Larry needed a lot of love, time, and patience to feel safe enough to come out of his hiding places. He was only able to emerge due to the incredible patience of our volunteers and staff who kept their distance but slowly encouraged him to come out from under his blankets. At first, it was just a careful look, and then a step forward that was unsure. Those small acts of bravery slowly grew into bigger ones, each revealing more of his gentle personality. Little by little we saw his uniqueness, his kindness, and his quiet strength.
We knew that Larry needed a special person. Not just an adopter, but a family that knew how to slowly build trust and heal with unconditional love. Then Lauren and her son came into his life. From the beginning, they didn’t see Larry’s fear; they saw his potential. They thought his hiding spots were cute, encouraged his curiosity, and let him grow at his own pace. Because of them, Larry’s past no longer defines him. He is loved, cherished, and free to be the dog we always knew he could be.
Larry’s days are now full of safety, hugs, and the chance to be himself. His journey teaches us that every animal deserves a chance to live, be happy, trust, and love. Thank you, Lauren, for opening your heart and home to Larry. Thank you for teaching us that love is the best gift and that it takes time to heal.
Larry’s story is more than just a happy ending; it’s proof of how important our animal rescue work is. Every time someone adopts a cat or dog we have recued, they have the chance to change the story, to turn fear into trust, and loneliness into belonging. Larry’s road to finding a family encapsulates the ERF Difference. A community of staff and volunteers who take the time and attention to get animals from sometimes extreme conditions of neglect and abandonment to be ready for living forever homes.
We think of all the other animals that are still waiting for their turn as we celebrate Larry’s new chapter. With your help, we can keep telling these stories of healing and hope. Here’s to Larry and all the other pets who are still on their journeys. We can all help them find their safe place, their family, and their forever home.
That’s why our Double The Love Campaign matters so much. Now through December 31, every gift you make will be matched—helping us reach our year‑end goal of $122,000. Every dollar truly makes a difference, and every act of generosity helps another pet like Larry find love, safety, and a second chance.
Any amount helps.
