Make your grab and go bag for your pets

California’s recent wildfires and powerful Santa Ana winds are a stark reminder that disaster can strike at any time. As we brace ourselves for future events, it’s crucial to prioritize our furry family members. Having a pre-packed emergency kit for your cat or dog can save precious time and reduce stress when evacuation orders come.

Why an Emergency Kit is Essential

In a crisis, your focus will be on getting yourself and your loved ones to safety. Having an emergency kit ready means one less thing to worry about. It ensures you have essential supplies to keep your pet comfortable and safe during a stressful displacement.

    Building Your Pet’s Go-Bag

Here’s a checklist of essential items to include in your pet’s emergency kit:

    1. Identification and Records:

    • Collar with ID Tags: Ensure your pet’s collar is secure with updated ID tags, including your name, phone number, and any critical medical information.
    • Microchip Information: Keep a copy of your pet’s microchip registration information.
    • Medical Records: Include vaccination records, medical history, and any current medications.
    • Recent Photos: In case of separation, having recent photos of your pet will aid in identification.

    2. Food and Water:

    • Food: Pack at least a week’s supply of your pet’s regular food in a waterproof container.
    • Water: Include bottled water for drinking.
    • Bowls: Pack collapsible or travel-friendly food and water bowls.
    • Can opener: If using canned food, don’t forget a can opener!

    3. Safety and Comfort:

    • Leash and Harness: A sturdy leash and a well-fitting harness are essential for safe transport and walks.
    • Carrier or Crate: A secure carrier or crate provides a familiar and safe space for your pet.
    • Bedding or Blanket: A familiar blanket or bedding provides comfort in unfamiliar surroundings.
    • Favorite Toy: A favorite toy can help reduce stress and anxiety.

    4. Hygiene and First Aid:

    • Waste Bags: Pack plenty of waste bags for sanitary disposal of pet waste.
    • Litter Box and Litter: If you have a cat, include a small, disposable litter box and litter.
    • Pet First-Aid Kit: Include essentials like bandages, antiseptic wipes, and any prescribed medications.

    5. Important Extras:

    • Medications: Pack any essential medications with clear dosage instructions.
    • Special Needs Items: If your pet has specific needs, such as anxiety medication or a special diet, be sure to include these items.
    • Contact Information: Keep a list of emergency contacts, including your veterinarian and local animal shelters.

    Tips for Evacuation with Pets:

    • Stay Calm: Your pet will sense your anxiety, so try to remain calm and reassuring.
    • Secure Your Pet: Always keep your pet leashed or in a carrier during evacuation.
    • Never Leave Your Pet Behind: If it’s not safe for you, it’s not safe for your pet.

By taking the time to prepare an emergency kit for your pet, you’re ensuring their safety and well-being in the face of unexpected events. Stay safe and be prepared!

If you haven’t heard, Eastwood Ranch Resuce and Pet Adoption Center is working on buying an emergency back up generator. Our new facility in Agoura Hills, opened last Summer, and now we know due to recent weather related events this past January, that we need a generator to help us:

    • Maintain a safe environment for the animals in our care.
    • Preserve critical medical supplies that require refrigeration.
    • Keep our rescue operations running when power is unavailable.

Any donations using this link will go directly to the Generator Campaign Fund. Any amount, small or large, is greatly appreciated to help us continue the care for the animals that have been rescued at The Ranch. Please click here to donate. Thank you!
