The journey to finding a furry companion can lead down many paths, but the most rewarding might just be through rescuing an animal from a high-kill city shelter. Eastwood Ranch is at the forefront of this life-saving work, pulling cats and dogs from Southern California’s most vulnerable situations and giving them the time they need to find their forever homes. But misconceptions often stand in the way. Let’s debunk those myths and explore the incredible difference Eastwood Ranch makes.
The Urgent Reality of High-Kill Shelters
High-kill shelters face overwhelming challenges, often leading to euthanasia due to limited space and resources. This is where Eastwood Ranch steps in, providing a lifeline for animals who would otherwise have little to no chance.
Myth 1: Animals From High-Kill Shelters Are “Problem” Animals
The assumption that these animals are somehow flawed is a harmful stereotype.
The Eastwood Ranch Reality: Eastwood Ranch carefully selects animals based on temperament and health, giving them a safe haven where they can decompress and reveal their true personalities. Many are simply victims of circumstance, needing a patient and loving environment. Eastwood Ranch provides that, and then works to find them the perfect homes.
Myth 2: You Won’t Find Healthy, Young, or Specific Breeds in These Shelters

This myth drives many to breeders, overlooking the treasures within shelters and animals rescue organizations.
The Eastwood Ranch Experience: Eastwood Ranch regularly rescues puppies, kittens, purebreds, and a wide variety of mixed breeds. The sheer number of animals in high-kill shelters means that every type of pet is waiting to be discovered.
Myth 3: Animals From High-Kill Shelters Are Too Traumatized to Adopt
Fear of an animal’s past is understandable, but often exaggerated.
The Eastwood Ranch Approach: Eastwood Ranch understands that these animals may need extra care and patience. They provide a nurturing environment, allowing animals to heal and learn to trust again. Their adoption process focuses on matching the right animal with the right family, ensuring a successful transition. We have in the past rescued a dog or two that we found needed some re-training with a professional dog trainer. Some dogs have been so neglected or traumatized that they need a little help and guidance to release some of the fear they have built up with humans or other pets.
Myth 4: Adopting From These Shelters Is Complicated and Expensive
People worry about hidden costs and complex procedures.
The Eastwood Ranch Difference: Eastwood Ranch strives to make the adoption process transparent and accessible. Our adoption fees cover essential medical care (spay and neuter, vaccinations, injuries, diagnostics), food and shelter. Our dedicated team provides support and love every step of the way. You are not only saving a life, but supporting the rescue efforts of The Ranch. Currently our adoption fee for dogs 6 months or older is $350. under 6 months is $450. Our fee for cats is $175 for a single cat, however, if you adopt two cats at the same time the fee will not change and it remain $175 only.
